Tony Conway

Former Executive Director of United Utilities

In a career spanning over 30 years, predominantly in the water industry, Professor Anthony Conway has led asset management, operations and engineering functions, as well as business and transformational change programmes.  He is an Engineer who sees things from a people perspective.

Tony is a former Executive Director of United Utilities; a FTSE 100 water and wastewater utility company serving seven million customers in the north west of England.  In his Executive role of Engineering Director he led engineering activity relating to United Utilities £3.6 billion capital investment programme, strategic asset management, shaping the company’s “Future Concept of Operation” together with delivering the related transformation programme. In December 2012 Tony took up the Executive role of Strategic Programmes Director, with an informal title of “Director of Curiosity”.  His focus was identifying world leading water utility innovation, engaging with innovation hubs around the globe, and the subsequent introduction of these new approaches and thinking into United Utilities. Tony retired from United Utilities in March 2015.

Tony is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield Water Centre where he is Chairman of the Twenty65 Water Research Programme.  He is a Director of the Water Industry Forum, a Director of British Water, and a former Non Executive Director of Aquam Corporation.  Tony provides strategic consultancy advice working with a range of organisations operating across the water sector.

A trained coach, Tony is a Master NLP practitioner and is Director of Coaching at 6-Group, where he works with executives in a range of industries and geographies, particularly in the area of leadership of change.
